Studying how protein transmembrane domains transmit signals across membranes is beset by unique challenges. In the SFB we will explore the molecular mechanisms of transmembrane signal propagation by 7 TM proteins. In recent years the paradigms of transmembrane signaling by these different classes of receptors have converged, as the importance of the interplay between lateral interactions and ligand induced conformational changes has been recognized. Unraveling these highly interdigitated processes in the context of the lipid environment requires the collaborative application of complementary structural and dynamic spectroscopies. Here, we aim in particular at exploring the dynamic transmembrane helix movements in transmembrane signal propagation by different types of receptor proteins, a process that is very similar to the conformational dynamics in membrane transporters.
